Similiar to the Fashawn Doc Holliday XXL 2010 Freshmen Breakdown I shamelessly jacked the great piece the good folks over at The Smoking Section did. Which can be found here in it’s entirety on the 2010 Freshmen Class, and I threw in some of my own Jack Handey like thoughts. Wiz will be one of the many great performers at The Root Picnic tomorrow.
You May Have Seen Him…: Spitting verses from a Pittsburgh tattoo parlor, getting inked for the millionth time.
Reminds You Of: Wiz Khalifa!
Strengths: Energy so high, you’ll catch a contact.
Weakness: Depth isn’t exactly his strong point.
Best-Case Scenario: Generally stoners are too lazy to put the cap back on the toothpaste but Wiz’s hustle has gotten him to the big stage without the hype of mainstream attention. A good eight mixtapes deep, watch his energy shift to churning out albums for the smokers to ride to in the near future. In between a million smoke breaks of course.
Recommended Listening: How Fly (Mixtape) (w/Curren$y)| Deal Or No Deal (Album) | Kush & Orange Juice (Mixtape)| Cabin Fever (Mixtape) | Up | Taylor Gang feat. Chevy Woods (Video)
Doc’s Thoughts: When my cousin first recommended Wiz’s Burn After Reading I was not impressed, in fact, I told him I hated him…his flow, songs, everything was so different, especially from most of the stuff that I tend to like. I pretty much felt the same way about Curren$y as well at first, but I became a fan of Curren$y a lot sooner…I still feel Curren$y is a bit better…but that’s besides the point. By the time I listened to How Fly I had started liking Curren$y, but I still wasn’t much of a fan of Wiz. I even remember my cousin coming up to visit and us listening to How Fly and I pretty much berated them both my cousin and Wiz lol…he just seemed so damn different at the time. Kind of like those Belgians made Dr. Evil so damn evil…nah…I thought about that line as I was writing…thought it was a stretch and then just said fuck i’m going to go with anyway. It’s funny when I originally wrote this Wiz seemed so different and now there’s like a million Wiz Khalifa clones and everyone seems to smoke weed too *shrugs*. When Kush & OJ finally dropped I figured I would give him another chance, especially with all the buzz surrounding that mixtape. I usually don’t trust the average person when it comes to music especially if they’re female, but if I hear about something enough times i’ll give it a listen. I listened to Kush & OJ and immediately loved it…hard to say if it was the best mixtape of last year though. I started to understand him more as an artist…it’s weird how that happens some times. I thought that mixtape best represented him as an artist. It’s different from everything else out there…just fun, stoner music that is just cool as hell and easy to listen to.
So I remember when I originally wrote this I was glad he opted to continue to blaze his own path, no pun intended, and create his own brand as oppose to riding off someone else’s coattails, especially the coattails of Drake and Rick Ross. I had the great pleasure of seeing him perform a couple times last year…we never got a chance do the interview we were originally supposed to do out in LA. That’s ok though, i’m not much for interviewing people these days. I was terribly surprised he was a great perform as most of the XXL 2010 Class are, but I was kind of surprise how much of a a sex symbol he was back when I first saw him perform. That was before Black & Yellow and the Wiz Khalifa mania switched into another gear. He was still pretty big then, but I just didn’t expect that. I even originally didn’t get to interview him because I got to the show a little late and then after the show he was overrun by groupies lol. I mean I guess every rapper gets girls, but it’s another thing to be a sex symbol…he’s definitely very much a sex symbol these days though…uhh #pauseholliday…I guess. I can relate because i’m a sex symbol as well. Anyway, maybe one of these days i’ll have the pleasure of meeting him and we’ll share stories of the music industry and our sexual escapades. My family is actually from Pittsburgh…even though I never met most of them because my Dad is a fucking man child. In fact, hold on one second…Dad, no I can’t read you a fucking story i’m writing…no, I don’t know where your sippy cup is…drink out of normal cup you’re a grown ass man for god sakes. All fuckery aside, i’m sure some of my coolness comes from Pittsburg like Wiz Khalifa. In case you might have missed some of the music from Wiz’s vast collection check the links below for every mixtape I could find from Mr. Black & Yellow himself…not sure about that new hairstyle though. Lion King hair style aside, Wiz makes great music, it’s just little different it took even me some time to understand that. While I don’t think he is even the best member of the 2010 class, he does make good music and it is clearly the biggest star of that class…thus far. Dude wasn’t named to the XXL Freshmen 2010 Freshman Class and named Breakthrough Artist of 2010 for nothing…actually wait OJ Da Juiceman was named to that class…just take my word for it and keep an open mind. Enjoy the music.
