I had hoped to originally write something about Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt. I & II along with something about the whole Wu-Tang and Snoop Dogg actually back when I went to Rock The Bell, but I kind of ran out of time before the show. I had hoped to go back and write about them later, but that never happened either smh. How do I repay Wu-Tang and Snoop, whom were easily 2 of the most instrumental pieces in my love of rap music growing up? With not a damn thing!!! Smh. Oh wait, I did originally post some of the Raekwon mixtapes below. Fast forward a couple months later and I actually ended up meeting Raekwon…actually you know what i’m not even in the best mood and I feel moreso like death today than normally so i’m not even going to force this shit on some Tyler Perry type shit. So here’s what I previously wrote after attending the Lyricist Lounge show along with some pictures I took. Hopefully, I get some better ones tonight at Rock The Bells show. Also, here’s a picture of our very own DJ NoPhrillz and Benja Styles with Raekwon. I don’t take pictures with rappers…EVER. Of course, you also have the aforementioned mixtapes, tracklisting and links below.
Note to self: lyricist has two I’s in it. I took a little vacation last week which partly resulted in me not writing shit, but being the workaholic I am I wouldn’t exactly call it an all out vacation. I had planned to hang out at my mom’s house starting Saturday mostly freeloading off her for most of my vacation. However, I think either Thursday or Friday I got an email about Raekwon performing at a free show in Prospect Park. So torn between sitting at my mom’s house being lazy or going to see the legendary Raekwon in NY and possibly banging this chick i’ve been talking to NY I obviously opted to go to NY. Aside, from the fact I got fucking lost in Prospect Park on the way to show I had a great time…yes I banged the chick too. Prior to show I didn’t even take the time to track down the flyer for the show or see who else was on the bill so I was pleasantly surprised to find out Smif-N-Wessun, Joell Ortiz, Neek, Large Professor, and Skyzoo were also performing. Shit, I easily donated $2 for that and purchase what ended up being a surprisingly, moderately priced alcohol beverage…I passed on Wu shirt though. While all of the acts were great, especially Skyzoo and Joell Ortiz I most enjoyed seeing Raekwon. There is no quite feeling like seeing a Wu show even if it’s only one of the members as the chick I was with found out. It’s funny as a kid I didn’t even know about the Purple Tape and I really didn’t care much for Raekwon either. That’s a different story these days as The Chef, whom performed in a purple shirt, is easily one of my favorite members of the Wu and one of my favorite artist. I even had the great pleasure of meeting him earlier this year, and if I wasn’t completely sure I would have went to pieces I would have interviewed him as well. As the show and my terrible feet began to wore down I left the show having even more respect for Raekwon. Not just because of his performance which was, of course, great, but also because of the way he has handled himself as he has gotten older. Most notably, the fact that he understands that he’s getting older and music is changing…some of new crop of music is very good and some of it is very bad. Essentially, understanding there is a place for everything and all of the current music isn’t going to be for everyone. I really wish I remember his exact quote, but it was something along the lines if you want a great meal [music] you come see The Chef…or something like that lol. I completely agree and i’m glad that I had a chance to meet the legend and see him perform once again. I wish I had some pictures of him performing though. Note to self: buy another battery and memory card for your fucking camera.
Slideshow of the pictures from the show can be found below, butyou can alsoclick view pictures all to see all of the pictures from the event and check out some other pictures from other events on my Picasa page. Picasa is being really niggardly right now.
