Raekwon (Rock The Bells 2010)

Posted by Doc Holliday on August 28 2010 Add Comments

I had hoped to write something about Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt. I & II along with something about the whole Wu-Tang and Snoop Dogg actually, but I kind of ran out of time before the show.  Maybe I i’ll write them later but knows, Wu-Tang and Snoop are 2 of the acts i’m looking most forward to seeing as they were pretty instrumental parts in my love of rap music.  Doggystyle especially, but I figured the least I could do was drop out some of these Raekwon mixtapes in the meantime.  So enjoy.

I’m not even sure if the Clipse are still performing at Rock The Bells, but since I have been a fan of them since they’re first album when my best friend, at the time, and I shared the bootleg of their first album.  Well he bought it and I burned a copy, so it was just like both of ours, but he just kept it at his house.  I’ve been a fan of their music ever since, especially the We Got It For Cheap mixtapes.  I hope one day everyone can put aside they’re differences and put out another mixtape.

Big Sean (Rock The Bells 2010) (XXL Freshmen 2010)

Posted by Doc Holliday on August 28 2010 Add Comments

Finally Famous 3 coming soon…I haven’t really listened to much of Big Sean’s music so seeing him perform will be my first real introduction to him.  So i’ll hold off on my own thoughts on him for now.

You May Have Seen Him…: Draped in the latest fashion in a desolate Detroit suburb while claiming Kanye’s G.O.O.D Music Imprint.

Reminds You Of: The Cool Kids.

Strengths: Punchlines galore. (Clever ones at that.)

Weakness: A flow lazier than Biggie’s eye.

Best-Case Scenario: Whether or not the G.O.O.D. Music co-sign helps or hurts him is yet to be seen, but Big Sean’s stylistic approach resonates with the trendy youth in a major way. Look for him to blaze through the trail paved by KiD CuDi where fashion and flows meet each other halfway.

Wiz Khalifa (Rock The Bells 2010) (XXL Freshmen 2010)

Posted by Doc Holliday on August 27 2010 Add Comments

Ok Mr. Fucking Wiz Khalifa…well since Wiz is not only rocking Rock The Bells, but it also a member of the XXL Freshmen 2010 Class i’m going to do something a bit different here.  By different I mean shamelessly jack the great post the good folks over at The Smoking Section did which can be found here in it’s entirety on the 2010 Freshmen Class and throw in some of my thoughts.  I figure since there post was so great and since I have similar thoughts on most of the artists aside from the ones I haven’t listened to, why re-invent the wheel.  So here we go…oh yeah plus if I don’t make myself start doing this now it won’t get done.

You May Have Seen Him…: Spitting verses from a Pittsburgh tattoo parlor, getting inked for the millionth time.

Reminds You Of: Wiz Khalifa!

Strengths: Energy so high, you’ll catch a contact.

Weakness: Depth isn’t exactly his strong point.

Best-Case Scenario: Generally stoners are too lazy to put the cap back on the toothpaste but Wiz’s hustle has gotten him to the big stage without the hype of mainstream attention. A good eight mixtapes deep, watch his energy shift to churning out albums for the smokers to ride to in the near future. In between a million smoke breaks of course.

Recommended Listening: How Fly (w/Curren$y)| Deal Or No Deal | Kush & Orange Juice

Doc’s Thoughts: When my cousin first recommended Wiz’s Burn After Reading I was not impressed, in fact, I told him I hated…his flow, songs, everything was so different especially from most of the stuff that I tend to like.  I pretty much felt the same way about Curren$y as well, but I started to become a fan of Curren$y a lot sooner.  So by the time I listened to How Fly I had started liking Curren$y, but I was still not much of a fan of Wiz.  I even remember my cousin coming up to visit and us listening to How Fly and I pretty much told my cousin the same thing again…he was just so damn different.  Kind of like those Belgians made Dr. Evil so damn evil…nah…I thought about that line as I was writing thought it was a stretch and then just said fuck i’m going to go with anyway.  By the time Kush & OJ finally dropped I figured I would give him another chance, especially with all the buzz.  I usually don’t trust the average person when it comes to music especially if they’re female.  However, if I hear about something enough times i’ll give a listen.  I listened to Kush & OJ and immediately loved it and understood him as an artist…it’s weird how that happens some times.  From his newer mixtapes I thought that mixtape best represented him.  It’s different from everything else out there, fun, stoner music that is just cool as hell and easy to listen to.  So I for one am glad he is continuing to blaze his own path and create his own brand as oppose to riding off someone else’s coattails, especially the coattails of Drake and Rick Ross.  I’m looking forward to seeing him perform again next month this time in Philly.  I saw him perform while I was out in LA and I was supposed to interview him, but we we’re running a little late and after the show he was overrun by groupies.  I have to say he is a great performer, but I was kind of surprise he is such a sex symbol lol.  I mean I guess every rapper gets girls, but it’s one thing to be a sex symbol.  I can relate because i’m a sex symbol as well, but it’s…kind of hard to explain you just have to see us in action.  Anyway, i’m hoping we can sit down and do the interview when he comes to Philly…I think I still have the questions too.  Maybe i’ll even get on stage too and we’ll both drive the ladies crazy…I guess it’s a Pittsburgh thing…but can I really claim Pittsburgh even though my family is from.  Fuck it i’m claiming it even though I know none of my family from there and the last time I went there as kid I wasn’t allowed outside.  So to Pittsburgh…oh and Wiz’s music, he wasn’t named to the XXL Freshmen 2010 Freshman Class and named Breakthrough Artist of 2010 for nothing.

Yelawolf (Rock The Bells 2010)

Posted by Doc Holliday on August 25 2010 Add Comments

I guess we’ll close out the day with some Yelawolf, this post should be much shorter than the other two.  Yelawolf is a classic case of me stubbornly ignoring something that I know is good…why I do such thing I don’t know.  Perhaps so I can be really impressed like I was from the first song of Yelawolf’s Trunk Muzik. It has nothing to do with me being racist or anything too, I can count the number of white friends I have on one hand.  Seriously, though I probably have more white and non-black friends than black friends… ***shrugs***  Anyway, I was listening to Big Boy album when I first heard Yelawolf, which is very good, which reminds i’m looking forward to pulling the David Blaine.  You know when you fucking a chick from that back then you let you man slide in there unbeknownst to the chick.  Then, you run around and knock on the window or something of that sort depending on where you live and then hilarity ensues.  Fuck you google unbeknownst is a fucking word too, for that i’m not capitalizing google.

Brother Ali (Rock The Bells 2010)

Posted by Doc Holliday on August 25 2010 Add Comments

I had heard about Brother Ali years ago, he’s kind of from that same underground as Reef The Lost Cauze and for whatever reason I always used to dwell in the underground where dudes talk about killing dudes and selling everything from white to white girls.  I don’t know that shit always speaks to my soul.  ***shrugs*** It finally took the year end list that 2dopeboyz put together…shit here’s the list I keep referencing A (2)Dope Year End List… No, I didn’t bite my own collage from the fallen soldier that is my Mixatpe Monday’s The Thank Me Later (No Drake Edition) found here from them.  I do “borrow” some things from there…HEY IT’S LIKE MY FAVORITE SITE!!!  Diz (of Teamcheating) had recommended Picasa a couple year’s back and I started using it much to my own chagrin a couple years back and I had originally stumbled upon their fancy little collage feature when I was working on one of my many unfinished projects.  Anyway, back to Brother Ali, I think it was…US that I first listened to and I was blown away from the 2nd track…the first track is the Intro.  Brother Ali’s flow at times resembles a minster or preacher especially if you ever been to a black church and the intro opens up in a church setting.  Then, Brother Ali proceeds to have his way with the second track like a dirty ass preacher would have his way with the church offering.  Coincidentally, the track is actually called Preacher…just listen…

I really liked that album a lot and 2 people’s who opinions I respect a lot when it comes to music loved it as well.  The title track is great as well, but I think my favorite song off the album is You Say (Puppy Love)…I can definitely relate.

So I think after that I listened to The Truth Is There next…may have been first.  At the time I didn’t like it as much as US, who knows how i’ll feel about it these days.  I’m looking forward to going back and listening to it and some of these Brother Ali mixtapes I just grabbed.  I’m listening to them now and they definitely got some shit on them, but US is really good so it’s probably not a fair comparison.  Nonetheless, The Truth Is Here does have really cool artwork, i’m such a whore for cool ass artwork.  See Stimulus Package another Rhymesayers byproduct.

I probably wouldn’t have much more to write about Brother Ali aside from the obvious…great, underrated MC from Minnesota who just so happens to be albino, but see this is where Nico The Beast comes in again.  For those of you who didn’t read the Reef The Lost Cauze post which can be found here.  There was a reference to him in there that was a segue into what i’m going to talk about here…well sort of…this shit went in a completely different direction.  I was going to talk about how they should get on a song together, but I like what I actually wrote it…and shit I still said they should get on a song together lol.  Anyway, Brother Ali happens to be one of Nico’s favorite artists and Picket Fence and Shadows On The Sun are like his favorite song and favorite album respectively.  They definitely have similar…music…I guess, well they both do a great job of mixing their own life experiences into their music and both are grossly underrated.  Most people are probably thinking like who the fuck is Nico The Beast right now.  Picket Fence takes us through some of the hardships, struggles, and life experiences of a young albino Brother Ali over a beautifully soulful track.  It’s a beautifully sad, yet encouraging song about essentially being different, which i’m sure a good amount of people can relate to, especially Nico being a White South Philadelphian guy in a mostly Black rap world.  Shit, really I can relate to it as well being an atypical Black guy in that same world, in fact, i’m still always tempted to check the “Other” box on those damn forms.  I mean because as i’ve been told since I was a kid, i’m not really Black because I talk differently, like different things, etc…and i’m obviously not white.  So what’s a Black kid from the Suburbs of New Jersey supposed to do lol…I guess like many others including Nico and Brother were supposed to use that same bullshit for a greater purpose.  I guess we go through all of this bullshit because were special…not the short the bus way, but because god is training us for something more.  Sorry for going all The View on yall, just started thinking about that shit as I was listening to music and writing, I guess it speaks to the influence and impact music can have on us.  Also, why even though people like Nico and Brother Ali are grossly underrated they shouldn’t be, because they make great music and actually make music that might help people…like myself.  So with that said I look forward to seeing Brother Ali perform again, this time at Rock The Bells, I saw him perform before at The Freeway Album Release Party for The Stimulus Package.  Hopefully, one day i’ll get to see Nico perform at Rock The Bells too.  Enjoy the Brother Ali music…I think you’ll like it.  Oh yeah here’s the damn song too, almost forgot that.

Reef The Lost Cauze (Rock The Bells 2010)

Posted by Doc Holliday on August 25 2010 Add Comments

It only seemed appropriate the first artist I talk about at this year’s Rock The Bells be Philly’s own Reef The Lost Cauze.  Around the time when I was working at Best Buy during college I had stumbled onto one of Reef’s CD at what i’m sure could only have been another shitty day at work.  Wait, wait…it was definitely A Vicious Cycle and I did have some good times at Best Buy.  It was thanks in part to Best Buy that I worked so hard in college, because if I had to work there after those first couple years I would have killed someone…but wait didn’t you go back and work there…and didn’t you fail a drug test…WHOA WHOA.  Let’s just talk about the music…OK…so yeah A Vicious Cycle.

I had completely abandoned the local scene to a certain extent at this point, I don’t even think I listened to the radio at this point.  Even though I was still a bit close minded as far as my music went at this juncture of my life, I still had plenty of music.  However, since Reef doesn’t exactly make the type of music that would get played on most radio stations, especially Philly stations…you know unless he paid for it and since he doesn’t make the type of music you would typically find on most mixtapes I knew nothing about him.  So I ignorantly picked up the CD laughed like who the fuck is this guy, ironically the same face I often receive all the time these days…karma is a bitch.  So as me and O became better friends and almost developed into a kinda Gillian and the Skipper type relationship…I would be a much smarter and cooler Gilligan though.  I found out him and Reef were actually really good friends then after some urging once we started working together I finally decided to go back and listen to some of his music.  I, of course, loved it…I couldn’t think of how to properly describe his music, and I call myself a writer, but the fact of the matter Nico The Beast did a great job of describing it in our interview which can be found here.  So I’ll use his quote, remember that name though we’ll revisit it again in a later Rock The Bells post.  ”He gives you the Reef that everyone knows, the punch you in the mouth, hard lyrics, hard body shit, but then he also gives you the introverted take a walk in the day of Reef The Lost Cauze and those are the best songs.”  I couldn’t agree more, in fact, my 2 favorites songs from his recent Fight Music which are also Nico’s favorite songs as well are the type songs Nico described Lazy Sunday and The Sun.

I doubt we are alone too, Reef, recently said a fan told him “I fuck my jawn all the time to Lazy Sunday”.  Listening to Fight Music as I write this I would definitely fuck my jawn if I had one to Lazy Sunday, really the whole album for that matter.  It’s a great album, I would highly recommend it.  Fuck here’s a link.

iTunes | Amazon

Fight Music and Reef are everything Nico mentioned plus when you factor in the great production on the album it is a very good album.  The album and Reef stands for everything I once loved about music, it shows that you can make a great album without fucking videos on youtube, twitter followers, the radio, and people will love it and your peers will respect you.  As a result of the album and Reef’s track record it was even enough to get him on the Rock The Bells Tour only one of the biggest tours of the years…SEE.  I wish more people would look at Reef’s example, but I know that won’t happen so fuck it.  It’s always nice to see hard working artist get the respect they deserve whether or not they make the music I like though, but especially if they make the music I like lol.  To wrap things up here’s a couple of my favorite Reef songs and some old mixtapes I had to do some digging for.  I know one other thing I thought was really cool about Reef was the fact he went to film school and had to intended on being the next Spike Lee before he ultimately found his calling with music.  Movies may be the one thing I love more than music…well that and this other thing I used to eat back in the day? What was it… oh yeah, pussy.  So hopefully one day we can get together and make a movie or a soundtrack of some sort definitely no homo.

Rock The Bells 2010 Hosted by Peter Rosenberg & D. Schwartz

Posted by Doc Holliday on August 24 2010 Add Comments

So I guess the other big event this week that i’m absolutely giddy about is Rock The Bells.  It almost feels like a culmination of everything this year.  CULMINATION!!!  I have been to something like 30+ concerts/shows this year some of them have been good, bad, and some of them have been LEGEND wait for it DARY.  Some of them have been so bad I couldn’t even write about them…i’m sorry I just lost a little respect for Harrisburg, but really I didn’t really respect you guys anyway.  I’m just kidding…but seriously though I don’t respect you guys.  This is easily the biggest concert though…I MEAN IT’S ROCK THE FUCKING BELLS!!!  I MEAN LOOK AT THAT FUCKING LINEUP!!!  It will also mark the unveiling of my new business…ohhhh fancy.  Patrick Bateman and Paul Allen would definitely be jealous…AND IT’S NOT EVEN BONE!!!  This is also going to mark a slight change in some of my usual posting and shenanigans.  For the most part i’m a terrible promoter of myself, if Phrillz and Keywest are something like a 10 on a scale of 1-10 i’m easily a -10.  I just figure like I know what the fuck i’m talking about and if you don’t care fuck you, this shit ain’t for you…you know sort of like Tony tried to tell Manny about Gina.  In slightly related news my spanish names in high school were Manolo and Rico Suave.  So anyway what i’m going to start doing is being like hear I know more about music than the average muthafucka and i’m doing something a little different than the average blogger so here take a look.  Plus I think the fans of some of the same artists that I like might like that as well and it’s a great way for me to give something back to the artists that have given so much to me.  Let’s not lie here it’s also a great opportunity for me to be like hey come on our show or do a song with us too…i’m no idiot.  So if you receive something on twitter from docholliday609 that’s me ***waves***.  Really though these Concert posts are easily my favorite and some of the hardest, but it shows my diversity and some of the artists I really like while doing something a little different than the average blog.  This time i’m going to highlight some of the artists in Rock The Bells throughout the week leading up to the show as oppose to just dropping one big post before the show, especially Philly’s own Reef The Lost Cauze…salute that man for his grind ***SALUTES***.  So without further ado one of the hosts of Rock The Bells, D. Schwartz, i’ll be looking forward to our man hug and 10 part handshake when we meet this weekend.

I think I’ve heard of D. Schwartz, never listened to his music but from the looks of the cover I think I should like it.  I mean I love alcohol, violence, and freestyles…I mean really who doesn’t.

The Jungle Instrumentals Release Cocktail Happy Hour

Posted by Doc Holliday on August 19 2010 Add Comments

Today from 7:00pm – 10:00pm at The Slingluff Gallery, 11 W. Girard Ave in Philly, Dumhi will be celebrating the release of the The Jungle Instrumentals.  Unfortunately, I won’t be able to make it because I have to work and plus I have the radio show tonight.  I couldn’t be more disappointed because I really liked the album and plus there is no cover and free drinks…what the fuck.  If you are free and/or not listening to Official Street Radio tonight make sure you stop by and then come bring me a drink.  Some words from the peoples at Dumhi

I just liked using the words cocktail, release, and happy in one shot.

FREE! This event is for yall. No cover. Free drinks (while supplies last). Good tunes. Hosted by good folks over at The Slingluff Gallery. (dope name right?) It is RIGHT next to the MRoom in Fishtown. Mad easy.

Also, the Dumhi Trio (Me, Eric and Jay) will be playing beats from Dumhi’s new album The Jungle. Live bass. Live sax. That said SAX dirtballs. Oww.

Space is limited. Not sure how limited drinks will be.

Nice intimate night with Dumhi.

Sexy.

Hope to see yall. Peace!

Holla!

Check bandcamp below for a preview of the goods ***Ladies Man Voice*** Fish sandwich not included.  Oh yeah and I actually found out about release of The Jungle Instrumentals on twitter, I guess that shit isn’t completed useless.  I have actually found some pretty interesting information on there…and I don’t know what I would do without those Brian Pumper updates.  In this wet pussy before church…ahh twitter we may become good friends after all.

As for the album itself I liked it, I had grabbed the promo CD at Fluid and it was sitting on my table with about 10 other CDs.  The amount of music in my h0use and on my computer is downright ridiculous if you haven’t noticed by now.  Anyway, I think someone from the team had mentioned something about it along with Reef so I was like ok let me give it a listen.  I actually thought Haj (of Dumhi) and Reef were brothers, Big O later set me straight.  The album was a good listen though smooth instrumentals with a Jazz like feel, I thought Haj’s beats went perfectly with Reef’s voice and style.  So my favorite songs ended up being all of the ones Reef was featured on, I would definitely recommend it for music fans out there.  It’s not your typical Rap album and as result I found it very enjoyable and refreshing.  In fact i’m about to listen to the instrumentals now.  Check out the leaked songs below and grab the album here.

1. Only The Strong Survive
2. No Redemption w/ Elucid
3. Into the Jungle
4. Dumhi Cannons w/ Random & Ethel Cee

Get Your Buzz Up Artist Showcase Philly Style

Posted by Doc Holliday on August 4 2010 Add Comments

So tonight is the Get Your Buzz Up Artist Philly Showcase, I posted the flyer for both NY and Philly because I had intended to check out both showcases.  I really like checking out new talent whether music, food, or even just women.  If there was ever a better job for me it’s definitely A&R, I get to listen to music, go check out shows and artists, fraternize, and drink.  It’s funny because I wanted to be a NFL or a NBA scout when I was kid, but then again I also wanted to be an assassin…no seriously though people always look at me a bit weird when I say that.  Anyway, I didn’t make the NY show because I went to the Freddie Gibbs and Black Milk show which was awesome thanks for asking, you can check out the music here and look out for the recap never at this rate.  It probably worked out for the best, though, because by the looks of the dress code at Element I definitely wouldn’t have gotten in.  No Doorags!!! No Extra Long Tees!!! No Torn Clothing!!!  WHAT??!!! I love wearing that shit…ALL AT THE SAME TIME!!!  Except I like to rock that shit with torn package pants and a pair of ugg boots.  In fact, I got numerous compliments about that particular outfit at the Freddie Gibbs show…at least I think they were compliments…a couple people said something, but I couldn’t really hear them because of the loud music so I just nodded my head and assumed they were dick riding.  Anyway, i’ll be at the show tonight i’ll probably just switch it up and go with jeans and tee I don’t need any more excessive dick riding tonight.  The rest of the team will be in the building as well, Phrillz and Benja are judging and the homie Nico is performing along with Thorobred, 2ew Gunn Ciz among many others.  So come out and enjoy the festivities…oh I almost forgot the lovely Sonyae Elise will be in the building performing as well.  Be sure to check out here mixtape below.
