The Authentic – Righteous Kill Mixtape x Real Recognize Real

Posted by Doc Holliday on September 2 2010 one Commented

Well this is one post I should have finished a lot time ago, fuck the date definitely says August 12th too…absolutely disgusting.  I figured since he is going to be on the show tonight I should finish this up…i’m not even sure why it took so long…smh.  I found out about The Authentic thanks to our very own DJ NoPhrillz, I have to say we make a pretty good team.  A man becomes preeminent, he’s expected to have enthusiasms. Enthusiasms, enthusiasms… What are mine? What draws my admiration? What is that which gives me joy? Baseball! There are a lot of similarities between baseball, music, and life plus i’m a big Phillies fan too.  A man stands alone at the plate. This is the time for what? For individual achievement. There he stands alone. But in the field, what? Part of a team. Teamwork… Looks, throws, catches, hustles. Part of one big team. Bats himself the live-long day, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and so on. If his team don’t field… what is he? You follow me? No one. Sunny day, the stands are full of fans. What does he have to say? I’m goin’ out there for myself. But… I get nowhere unless the team wins.  Team! ***Beats my co-worker to death with a baseball bat in the next cubicle*** Team! I think it’s one of the reason Official Street Radio/Exponent Ent. runs so well, we’re a great team.  So with Phrillz’s recommendation I started following The Authentic on facebook after we exchanged a couple messages and the first thing I noticed was hard he works, performing everywhere and doing radio shows all over the place…I think I heard he was even performing…dammit I couldn’t think of anywhere funny for a fake performance.  I’m slipping today, but anyway I finally caught up with The Authentic in Olde City…or so I thought.  I was instead talking to this ole Tyler Perry ass nigga who didn’t bother to tell me he wasn’t The Authentic even though I thought he was.  I hold no grudge though, i’m looking forward to his mixtape and his upcoming movies where he plays a FBI agent in both of them.  I’m expecting nothing short of greatness based on the way he was taking pictures and handling himself that night.  I finally did find The Authentic though, and we talked for a little while after his performance, real cool down to earth dude.  No surprise he was originally from Jersey even though he now resides in Philly.  His music like his personality is bit different than most rappers as well, it’s uplifting with a conscious tone.  However, unlike some conscious rappers he still remains a bit…gutter, fuck it i’m going with gutter.  Fuck a thesaurus!!!  My two favorite tracks do a great job of showcasing the gutter, yet conscious abilities of The Authentic, Raw and the jazz reminiscent Thru Our Eyes, which is probably my favorite song on the mixtape.  Those 2 tracks are a perfect example of the talent and balance found on the mixtape.  So do yourself a favor and check out the whole mixtape in all it’s bandcamp goodness below and if you like it as much as I did throw the brother a couple fazoules.  Also be sure to check out Real Recognize Real and tune into Official Street Radio tonight from 6-10 UERadioLive.com as The Authentic will be one of our guests on the show.

PUSH! Montana – Rebirth Of Fresh Volume 1: No Floors! (Presented by Don Cannon)

Posted by Doc Holliday on September 1 2010 one Commented

This is probably going to be my last post of the day unless I feel like doing some work after running around, this one is kinda funny too.  So I went to the great Black Milk and Freddie Gibbs show about a month back, the post with the mixtapes can also be found here.  I’m not on twitter a lot because i’m always so busy, but i’m on there from time to time…and i’ve been told i’m kinda funny.  Ok enough modesty, i’m funny, and for whatever reason people don’t expect it.  I usually post twitter updates from the numerous shows I go to…assuming I have phone service…Rock The Bells i’m looking at you.  At this particular show Push! Montana was one of the opening acts and…he definitely wasn’t terrible, I just wasn’t overly impressed with live performance.  I’m sure it won’t be the last time this happens, I tried to recently write about this phenomenon today here actually.  However, I was gracious enough to complement Mr. Montana on his chain though, I mean it was a very nice chain lol.  Anyway, he hits me up on twitter, saying thanks and gives me his mixtape.  I can respect that and me being the stand up guy I can only listen to it and post it on our site.  By the looks of the track listing and based on the fact Don Cannon is on it i’ll probably like it.  Lesson as always don’t talk too much shit, which I usually don’t and if you do at least get in the gym.  Well i’m off to the gym for the first time in a while before I do some running around, enjoy the music.

J. Ross – The Epidemik (Hosted by Superstar Jay)

Posted by Doc Holliday on September 1 2010 Add Comments

Damn, this is another post about a Jersey artist…fuck it we need this shit lol.  Once again another case of me going to look for good music and finding it…oh along with the most aggressive frisk i’ve ever witnessed in my life.  I hope it was as good for that aggressive as security guard as it was for me.  Anyway J. Ross was one of 2 artists both from Jersey that I really liked on my visit to the Arena to go see The Squadaz and The Street Spittas perform.  After a little technical difficulty…wait hold up i’ll tell you the one thing that fucking sucks about going to look for new music and artists.  I try to get to these events early to see the opening acts and the shits never FUCKING STARTS ON TIME.  Of course, there is always a little technical difficulty as well at least there is usually some nice ladies to take a look at.  Anyway, after the aforementioned technical difficulties I was greeted to an impressive a cepella freestyle from J. Ross that immediately got my attention and a couple more impressive songs.  He did have like 50 niggas on stage on though, but nonetheless we talked a bit after the show I got his CD and was even more impressed.  As were some of the Official Street Radio family, J. Ross is kind of a gritty, yet deep artist and my favorite songs were the deeper ones.  I’m definitely looking for the new mixtape which is coming soon.  Hype what up!!! Jersey!!!

Apollo The Great – H.I.M. 1 & 2 x Showtime At The Apollo

Posted by Doc Holliday on September 1 2010 Add Comments

Download Mixtape: H.I.M. (History Is Made) 2

As a kid growing up in South Jersey especially Mays Landing I could count the number of rappers from Jersey on one hand, especially South Jersey.  Mays Landing is a small suburb, a bit more south of Camden, like 10 minutes from Atlantic City in case you were wondering.  I recently went to a little music seminar which was cool but I definitely disagreed with the notion that you rarely find good music when you go looking for it.  I don’t know maybe i’m different but I go looking for great music and I usually find just that, I listen to recommendations and keep my ear to the streets…shit from time to time I wait up in the streets.  Alcohol is usually involved in those incidents, but even in my beloved New Jersey I have found some great artists lately on my obsessive musical quests.  Apollo The Great is one of those artists and he might possibly be one of the best up and coming artist from my home state.  Aubrey Green, whom manages Apollo, recommended I give Apollo a listen, but it wasn’t until his appearance on our radio show that I actually listened to his music.  I kind of like that I didn’t hear his music until his appearance on the show as well, I like to be surprised when it comes to music.  I like to try to recreate those old days without the internet when an album or mixtape was the first time I heard the artist’s project for the first time.  It’s like musical overload these days and in case you ever wondered that’s why I don’t post a lot of singles or videos on our site.  That’s because I miss the old days sometimes and plus I figure you can find that shit on any other website.  So, of course, considering how talented Apollo is when I first him I was blown away.  The first song I heard was his single Call It Quits andthe flow, lyrics, and beat selection were all great.  Listen.

Download: Call It Quits

It’s something you very rarely find from a young artist these days, you can hear the influence of numerous artists in him.  Most notably, Nas which is probably the best comparison for Apollo, a young Nas.  I often hear so much about how so many artists don’t listen to any other music but there own…and to be quite honest it shows sometimes.  I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t listen to other music or some of classics to improve their own skills.  It’s like with anything else if you don’t study and put work in how do expect to improve.  Especially, when you surround yourself with yes men.  So it’s no surprise I always like artists that listen to a wide variety of music and not because i’m some fucking relic or anything either.  I just also believe those guys are diverse artists that understand how to make great music in just about any way imaginable.  The freestyle cypher that we usually close out our show with further showed that skill and influence as well.

So a couple weeks or maybe a month after that first meeting and shortly after seeing him perform I finally sat down and went through Apollo’s music.   I partly expected to hear a very cocky albeit talented artist as I listened to Apollo’s 3 mixtapes.  However, his music couldn’t have been more different than what I expected based on the person I met.  I partly understand, he is very talented and he is a rapper…so far be it for any rapper to be modest and let the music do the talking lol.  In all fairness as I have worked with more and more artist I understand a bit more, i’m sure the rap game can be pretty frustrating these days especially with artist with little to no talent blowing up.  I’m just always come from the school of thought that modesty is just better…and more fun too, far better to surprise someone than to disappoint them.  It’s probably the reason I always tell chicks i’m terrible in bed, because you never know she could have been banging a porn star.  So I like to keep expectations low…plus you know you have a small dick…WHOA WHOA…it’s not small either it’s fucking thin…spaghetti thin like the cop in Deuce Bigalow.  It’s like a twizzler…if you painted it silver and twisted it on the end, it’d look like a kick-stand.  That’s neither here nor there though, it’s just funny because Apollo’s music is so much different than I expected, but still very, very good.  I think he might be better suited to dial it down a bit and try to reflect the artist portrayed in his music a bit more.  Assuming the uplifting, introspective, and deeper person in his music or more akin to his actual personality.  You never know with rappers, I just assume everyone is lying.

Which finally brings us back to Apollo The…Performer, whether or not that person you meet when you hear his music is who he really is or not.  That is how I think he should work on presenting his music when he is performing.  I was struggling for awhile to describe how exactly an artist should perform and why certain artist move me while others don’t and some just make me want to cry.  I mean because Apollo’s live set is decent, but considering the quality of his music it could be much better…but then again the same could be said for a lot of artists much older.  A lot of them don’t even make music nearly as good…it’s easy to point out the good, great, and bad performance, but it wasn’t at the recent Curren$y concert.  Where I also saw Skyzoo perform for like the 10th time this year, that I finally could articulate that phenomenon.  So here goes…I believe an artist live set should match his music and how you want that music to be presented to the people.  It should match your delivery, if you have a hard hitting, crazy delivery like Skyzoo your live set should match that.  If you make fun, stoner yet lyrical music then I should feel like you are having fun while molesting the track as you perform…and you should probably be smoking too lol.  So really in closing the only reason I mention any of this is because i’ve been meaning to write something about people performing.  Secondly, as I wrote this earlier while listening to H.I.M. 2 there wasn’t much else to even complain about Apollo music.  I hope that doesn’t go to his head because any artist can always improve.  I would just say work on the live performance and maybe be a bit more humble, aside from that I think Apollo has a very bright future and I for one am glad he’s holding it down for Jersey.  Oh yeah!!! Showtime At The Apollo is probably my favorite of his mixtapes/albums too, as he raps over some classic beats most notably the beat from my favorite song It Was A Good Day on that mixtape. You can also check out more Apollo music and videos over at his website ApolloIsHIM.com.  Camden what up!!!

I was waiting for the rest of bonus tracks to drop before I sat down and listened to this or even posted it, but in an attempt to get some stuff off my never ending checklist I figured I would post this now and then revisit it when the bonus tracks drop.  You know as oppose to posting the same shit over and over like people do on facebook, like after 100th time you post it i’m going to be like you know what I think this 100th time was the charm let me go listen to whatever the fuck this guy is posting now.   Ahh don’t mind me i’m a little sick…anyway some might have you believe that’s there’s no longer any talented rappers from NY which couldn’t be farther from the truth.  Even though there wasn’t a member of XXL Freshmen class from NY, but somehow OJ Da Juiceman landed on that list…hmm very suspect.  Lol I had to it, but really OJ Da Juiceman is not a very good rapper and i’m not some NY elitist, but some of my favorite rappers happen to call NY home and maybe i’ll add some of these guys to that list.  I’ve heard music from some of these guys, others not so much, but i’m excited to check out the whole mixtape especially coming from a website I happen to respect very much like 2dopeboyz.  Not sure if you readers out there like me but hopefully you respect me…you know kind of like Ron Burgundy.  Enjoy.

Big Sean – Finally Famous Vol. 3: BIG (Hosted by Don Cannon)

The new mixtape from Big Sean and THHHEEEE CANNON!!!  I’m listened to it now as I type this and it’s not bad, I didn’t get to see him perform at Rock The Bells.  However, I did get a cold after standing outside for what like 7 hours…I did have a great time though after I calmed the fuck down though.  It was a little different then I expected and i’ve never been to a concert that big.  Plus I was all ready to be in V.I.P. popping bottles and showing off my fancy new business cards…that did not happen…I did try to sneak back there twice to meet my friend before just saying fuck it though.  Some of my highlights were Immortal Technique, Wu-Tang, and Snoop…i’ve never really been a big Lauryn Hill or A Tribe Called Quest fan.  All in all it was good time, but I wish I could have seen Big Sean and Yelawolf perform and popped some bottles…I was practicing popping bottles all week too.  I guess i’ll just have to settle for this Big Sean mixtape, it’s pretty good.

Evidence – The Layover

iTunesFifth Element

I’m almost ashamed to say I used to hate on Dilated Peoples for no reason in my younger days…smh.  I stumbled upon The Layover in the spring and immediately loved it.  From the title track I was enthralled with Evidence’s slow flow and the production, i’m pretty much a sucker for beats with dope cuts and scratches.  While do I always feel the need to call all cuts and scratches dope ***shrugs*** who knows.

Download: The Cold Weather

So there is no surprise my 3 favorite tracks on the album are The Layover, So Fresh – Step Brother, and my favorite track on the album Cold Weather (Cats & Dogs). I guess it should be no surprise that some of my favorite producers implore those same elements in their production DJ Premier, Statik Selektah, Marco Polo, DJ Revolution, Scram Jones, etc.  I spent the next couple weeks/months after listening to the album digging through the rest of The Dilated People’s collection.  Which reminds me I still need to listen to Rakaa’s Crown of Thorns that recently dropped.  It was safe to say I was eagerly looking forward to Evidence’s new album Cats & Dogs. However, for whatever reason after listening to The Layover god knows how many times and almost every Dilated People’s album I never listened to The Layover Mixtape until the video for To Be Continued dropped a couple weeks backs.  So as I started getting that post ready which can finally be found here together and trying to figure out what I wanted to write I finally listened to the mixtape…and it was good.  Those 2 tracks with like 40 muthafuckas on them are fucking serious too.  I’m going to need Evidence and Alchemist to do a whole album together too.

I had hoped to write something about Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt.
