RIP Corey Haim

Posted by Jodie S. on March 10 2010 Add Comments

So this morning I woke up to find that Corey Haim was dead. Although cause of death is still pending, it appears to be from an overdose. Doing some research this morning, sources claim he has been battling addiction and depression for years.

Corey Haim

This is the fourth death in the last few weeks due to depression.

First it was Andrew Koenig, who we all knew and loved as “Boner” from Growing Pains.

Andrew Koenig

Then Marie Osmond’s son, Michael Blosil, who apparently was a gay man trying to live under the laws of the Mormon Church. He left a note on his bed explaining to his family and friends that he felt like “he didn’t fit in anywhere”.

Next it was Corey Haim. For any 80’s baby he was an idol. The movie “Lost Boys” was a staple in anyone’s VHS collection.

Then finally Andrew “Randy” Kwasniewski, the President and Chief Operation Officer at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel, found by his wife with a self inflicted gun shot wound to his head.

What is going on? Depression is taking over. It concerns and saddens me to no end. We have created a society in which people are not really given the tools to deal with the stressors of everyday life instead they are medicated and self medicate on the regular.

According to UpliftProgram.com: Depressive disorders affect approximately 18.8 million American adults or about 9.5% of the U.S. population age 18 and older in a given year. This includes major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, and bipolar disorder.
and
Pre-schoolers are the fastest-growing market for antidepressants. At least four percent of preschoolers — over a million — are clinically depressed.

Wait! Hold up! Pre-schoolers are the fastest growing market for antidepressants??? It seems the answer now is to drug everyone instead of teaching them the how to live.

Now I do believe medication is necessary for some people, don’t get me wrong. Ive definitely seen it help out a number of people.

My problem lies with in the fact that when we write out prescriptions there is not enough cognitive therapy going hand and hand with the medication.

Life’s stressors DO NOT GO AWAY. They change, grow, get worse, get better etc. but never disappear. So are we telling our children that anytime they get a little stressed out … just pop a pill and you will be ok? Wouldn’t it be better if we actually taught them how to help themselves when the stressors arise? I do not want our children to think that by masking emotions things get better. I want them to believe they are in control of their life and that they can dream and create the life they want to live. I want to build self esteem and confidence into our new generations.

Next time you see your child or any child, remind them they are perfect just as they are and that all thing are possible.

Who’s with me on this?

DMX Arrested … Again

DMX

DMX’s penchant for getting in trouble with the law continues, as the once-superstar rapper was once again arrested.

According to TMZ.com, the Yonkers rapper was arrested yesterday (March 9) in Arizona for violating the terms of his probation by using illegal drugs over the past nine months.

“He’s been battling addiction for some time and he’s in need of treatment,” says X’s lawyer, Gary Jenkins.

“We’re hoping that maybe Dr. Drew might be able to help him,” added Jenkins, referring to Dr. Drew Pinsky, a radio and television personality who specializes in addiciton medicine. In addition to hosting the syndicated radio talk show Loveline, Pinsky produces and stars in the Vh1 show Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.

The Ruff Ryder has been arrested for countless charges in recent years, including having a warrant for having no vaild driver’s license, as well as drug and animal cruelty charges.

UPDATE: Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio revealed to MTV News today that the Yonkers emcee admitted to using cocaine, as drugs were found. As a result, the once-platinum superstar rapper remains in Maricopa County Jail. The sheriff was quoted as saying, “I think it’s about time to give him hard time.”

The sheriff did also suggest a behind-bars drug program that could allow DMX more leniency to expected parole violation sentencing.

D’Angelo Arrested

Posted by Jodie S. on March 7 2010 Add Comments

Around 2 a.m. yesterday morning, R&B singer D’Angelo was arrested in the West Village of Manhattan by an undercover policewoman, after he mistook her for a prostitute and offered her $40 for oral sex.

Such a deal!

The officer promptly busted his ass and searched his vehicle, which had $12,000 stashed inside!

And he was such a cheapskate?! LOLz!

“Lost” in 5 minutes …

Posted by Jodie S. on March 1 2010 2 Commented

Ok if you are like me … you have never seen an episode of ABC’s hit show “Lost”. Well I don’t really watch much TV but I have always been curious about this show.

Recently the same thing happened with “Jersey Shore” and thankfully Marcus put up a “Jersey Shore 101” on this site to help fill me in on all the hype.

Well today I was doing some work for Big OC Diesel and came across this on www.comicvsaudience.net … “Lost” in 5 minutes. For the record I had no idea all this was going on … I really thought a plane crashed and people were just stuck on an island but looks was more complicated than that! Gonna have to get the dvd’s. Take a look at this vid:

Lupe Fiasco Talks Label Troubles

Posted by Jodie S. on February 26 2010 Add Comments

by Slava Kuperstein – HipHopDx.com

In an interview with theage.com.au, Lupe Fiasco recently spoke about the difficulties he has with his label.

”The most difficult part of the music business is the label,” says Lupe. “What I want to do and what they want me to do – creatively – is in conflict. It doesn’t keep me up at night. I look at it as a challenge. It’s not meant to be easy.”

Despite a measure of success with hits like “Superstar,” Lupe says his label doesn’t have an accurate idea of what his fans want. ”There’s a misunderstanding with my fanbase. People [at Warner] feel they know my fans more than I do. They want me to step out of my comfort zone and step into theirs. I don’t have necessarily the celebrity success they want me to have but it’s more social success and being able to speak at a college
about world affairs. That’s a success, to me.”

On 2007’s Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool, the rapper detailed others’ expectations about his music on the track, “Dumb It Down.” But while this issue isn’t new to Lupe, he remains steadfast in what his idea of success is. ”I don’t want to be Jay-Z and be worth $400 million and perform on every awards show. It’s getting in touch with somebody who needs to improve their self-esteem. As opposed to driving a Bentley and putting some chains on.”
