Hyspeed – Wanted (Hosted by DJ NoPhrillz)

Download Mixtape: Wanted

This another one that came highly recommended from DJ NoPhrillz, despite the fact he hosted and/or mixed this mixtape lol.  I’m beginning to think that DJ NoPhrillz guy knows a little bit about music, but seriously can we come together with an uniform term for DJ involvement on mixtapes.  Some DJs host, some mix, and some present them muthafuckas…couldn’t think of a good enough joke there.  Nonetheless, Hyspeed like I said came highly recommended and I have to say for good reason.  He is definitely one of the best young artist I have heard in the city from his flow and lyrics.  He even has some content behind him too, plus he is a kind of slick talking type dude which always scores you a couple points with me.  It’s funny because Team Cheating member Bags just hit me up drunk ranting about Hip Hop being dead and shit I, of course, strongly disagreed.  There are plenty of great young artists making music that he would love like Hyspeed.  I did agree that the music that is pushed these days sucks but then again I don’t listen to that shit so fuck it.  It’s also funny because in his drunken state one of the artists he mentioned was Jae Hood…old Jae Hood…Best of Jae Hood Vol. 1 Jae Hood.  That dude was a monster, and even though Hyseed doesn’t really remind me of Jae Hood I can see the same talent in him.  Damn I miss the old Jae Hood as I listen to one of his old mixtapes now, the only reason I’m not listening to Hyspeed right now is because his music is on my other computer too.  I need to strike while iron is hot, I have the attention span of mongoose on meth at times.  Trust me and Phrillz though, Hyspeed is definitely one of the best young artists doing it in the city.  I’m definitely looking forward to eventually meeting him and hearing some more of his music along with his new mixtape.  I’m kind of looking forward to the new Resident Evil movie too which i’m assuming the new mixtape is based off from the looks of the cover, but I refuse to watch it in 3D.  I’m still boycotting Avatar.

Kilogram – 1st Quarter The Grind x I Go In Why The Fu@K Not!!!!! x Hustle & Flow

Posted by Doc Holliday on September 8 2010 Add Comments

Here is another long overdue to post, I first met Kilogram when I first started working for Exponent and Official Street Radio on the show.  I had heard his version of Jersey back when it first came out, but I liked The A-Team’s grittier version of Jersey a bit more.  In fact, The A-Team’s version was my ringtone for a minute.  I even remember one time that shit went off during one of my engineering exams and had a couple heads nodding.

So when I got ready to do this big Jesey post which can be found here after I returned from LA.  I forgot all about Kilogram and a bunch of other Jersey artists.  I never meant for it to be the end all be all post of Jersey artists I just wanted to show some love to my home state.  However, I could have reached out and took advantage of my resources, but it was pretty early on in my defense and Kilogram had temporarily removed some of his mixtapes off of Datpiff.  Rest assured the updates post will include a lot more Jersey artists, just to name a few…you know assuming I can find their music or they send it to me.  Big Lou, J. Ross, Kilogram, Big Ooh, Apollo The Great, Riz, J. Griff, Rich Quick, Charlie Heat, Fel Sweetenberg, and hopefully many more.  Still when I met Kilogram definitely called me out on it…months ago…disgusting…i’m looking forward to finally sitting down and listening to all of his mixtapes along with his mixtape dropping soon.  I really like the new song that Mr. Hype sent me that he did with J. Ross of Ross’ new mixtape.

Young De – Can’t Turn Back Freestyle

Posted by Doc Holliday on September 8 2010 Add Comments

Can’t Turn Back Freestyle by Young De as well as a behind the scenes look at his travels and performances with Cypress Hill and Xzibit.  I fucks with this new joint from Young De that he dropped in my email…yeah I know people…well actually he dropped it in DJ NoPhrillz’s email who then sent it to boss lady J, who then sent it me…but still minor details.  I fucks with the video too even though it’s more of promo video than an actual video for the freestyle too.  It’s much better than some videos and especially those fucking videos that are really fucking picture slide shows, every time I see one of those I want to scream as mentioned here.  I like Young De a lot and not just because he used to be in a group with our own DJ NoPhrillz.  I really liked his mixtapes and my new assistant Velv liked this song too…oh yeah I got an assistant…SCORE!!!  Oh yeah i’m not supposed to call her my assistant though, she is The Assistant A&R and also a very fine writer and also working on becoming a very good publicist.  Look out for the Young De interview typed up by her very soon…well sooner than I would have been able to finish it…even though she doesn’t know it yet.  Check out some more Young De shit below.  Also he sent the fucking video, a fancy picture with the sky and the clouds and shit, and the fucking mp3, that’s how you get it fucking done…BITCHES!!!

DON’T PUT THEM FUCKING SLIDESHOWS ON YOUTUBE!!! THEY ARE NOT FUCKING VIDEOS!!!

Posted by Doc Holliday on September 8 2010 Add Comments

Sorry about the lack of posts, I had planned to get a shitload of work done this weekend and then my fucking allergies went on the fucking fritz. I’m back now…with a fucking vengenance…with the scorn of a pregnant woman getting cheating on by her husband/boyfriend with an ugly bitch.  That is is why I always cheat on any girlfriends with prettier girls, I just figure it’s the right thing to do.  Anyway, I’m hear right now to not only introduce something new to you all, but to also talk about an epidemic that is sweeping the music I love and really the nation.  I have long had a love/hate relationship with youtube, I’ve never been one of those dudes that scours youtube or any of the other video sites for that matter for videos.  In fact, i’m a bit of film elitist or a film snob, a couple of years ago I thought it would have been more likely I would have been involved in film as oppose to music.  I probably would have minored in film if I wasn’t partying so much and trying to slay white bitches.  It’s been said that even though my vast movie collection is not alphabetized i’m able to find any movie immediately, I guess that’s just one of the many things that makes me Doc Holliday aka The Most Interesting Man In The World.  In case you were wondering that youtube clip ***shakes fist*** is my first upload and a clip from DON’T!!!  Which was one of the fakes trailers in between one my favorite movies Grindhouse from two of my favorite directors, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez.  I, of course, saw Machete over the weekend and loved it…you know because I understood the intent of the movie and thought he nailed it.   Which brings us back to the reason were here.  DON’T!!!  Which is going to be a segment when I put my craziness on full display for you all over something that truly makes my blood boil and that I don’t want muthafuckas to do anymore.  Protagonist of this inaugural edition DON’T!!!  Youtube videos, but it’s much deeper than that.  ***deep breath***  Youtube is a great promotional and marketing tool, however, it is not the only promotional and marketing tool.  It’s great to be able to post a song on youtube for all the world to see hopefully accompanied by a video, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be sending out those songs to blogs or especially DJs.  There is absolutely no reason why someone should have to rip any artists song off youtube.  Which really any idiot can do, so if you are putting songs up on youtube thinking someone can’t get the mp3 than you are sadly mistaken.  If someone wants to play your song, let them…you may never know who they are or how they may be able to help you.  I’m really coming to find that it’s the artist that take advantage of the opportunities that they are given that are successful.  I’m always amazed why any artist would blow off someone that is trying to help them.  My issue lies a bit deeper though, I can look past a non-video on youtube if it’s not actually a video or even just a still image especially if it’s a song I want to hear in the spur of the moment.  On the other hand, for whatever reason those fucking slideshows send me into a fucking fury. ***blood beginning to boil***  They almost turn me into Pinky from Next Friday ***tries to remain calm*** ***kicks over bottle of lotion on the masturbation station next to my desk*** IF ONE OF YOU NIGGAS MAKE ANOTHER OF THOSE MUTHAFUCKING SLIDESHOWS, I SWEAR IT’S OVER NIGGA!!!  THAT SHIT IS NOT A FUCKING VIDEO!!!  IT’S A FUCKING SLIDESHOW!!!  IT’S LOOKS FUCKING STUPID AND THAT SHIT IS GAY!!!  AND I AIN’T PLAYING NIGGA!!!  OH, SHIT, WHAT!!!  YOU GONNA KEEP POSTING THEM SHITS!!! DO IT AGAIN!!! DO IT AGAIN, NIGGA!!! I FUCKING DARE YOU!!!  Excuse me…that shit just really pisses me off…please for the love of god just don’t do that shit anymore.  So I guess that concludes my first installment of DON’T!!!, please just make sure all of you artists are exploring all of your options and taking full advantage of them.  The internet is a great tool, but is also makes people very lazy.  In closing if you have to post a non-video on youtube just make it a still image, I don’t want to have to come looking for you.

Sincerely,

Doc

The Authentic – Righteous Kill Mixtape x Real Recognize Real

Posted by Doc Holliday on September 2 2010 2 Commented

Well this is one post I should have finished a lot time ago, fuck the date definitely says August 12th too…absolutely disgusting.  I figured since he is going to be on the show tonight I should finish this up…i’m not even sure why it took so long…smh.  I found out about The Authentic thanks to our very own DJ NoPhrillz, I have to say we make a pretty good team.  A man becomes preeminent, he’s expected to have enthusiasms. Enthusiasms, enthusiasms… What are mine? What draws my admiration? What is that which gives me joy? Baseball! There are a lot of similarities between baseball, music, and life plus i’m a big Phillies fan too.  A man stands alone at the plate. This is the time for what? For individual achievement. There he stands alone. But in the field, what? Part of a team. Teamwork… Looks, throws, catches, hustles. Part of one big team. Bats himself the live-long day, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and so on. If his team don’t field… what is he? You follow me? No one. Sunny day, the stands are full of fans. What does he have to say? I’m goin’ out there for myself. But… I get nowhere unless the team wins.  Team! ***Beats my co-worker to death with a baseball bat in the next cubicle*** Team! I think it’s one of the reason Official Street Radio/Exponent Ent. runs so well, we’re a great team.  So with Phrillz’s recommendation I started following The Authentic on facebook after we exchanged a couple messages and the first thing I noticed was hard he works, performing everywhere and doing radio shows all over the place…I think I heard he was even performing…dammit I couldn’t think of anywhere funny for a fake performance.  I’m slipping today, but anyway I finally caught up with The Authentic in Olde City…or so I thought.  I was instead talking to this ole Tyler Perry ass nigga who didn’t bother to tell me he wasn’t The Authentic even though I thought he was.  I hold no grudge though, i’m looking forward to his mixtape and his upcoming movies where he plays a FBI agent in both of them.  I’m expecting nothing short of greatness based on the way he was taking pictures and handling himself that night.  I finally did find The Authentic though, and we talked for a little while after his performance, real cool down to earth dude.  No surprise he was originally from Jersey even though he now resides in Philly.  His music like his personality is bit different than most rappers as well, it’s uplifting with a conscious tone.  However, unlike some conscious rappers he still remains a bit…gutter, fuck it i’m going with gutter.  Fuck a thesaurus!!!  My two favorite tracks do a great job of showcasing the gutter, yet conscious abilities of The Authentic, Raw and the jazz reminiscent Thru Our Eyes, which is probably my favorite song on the mixtape.  Those 2 tracks are a perfect example of the talent and balance found on the mixtape.  So do yourself a favor and check out the whole mixtape in all it’s bandcamp goodness below and if you like it as much as I did throw the brother a couple fazoules.  Also be sure to check out Real Recognize Real and tune into Official Street Radio tonight from 6-10 UERadioLive.com as The Authentic will be one of our guests on the show.

PUSH! Montana – Rebirth Of Fresh Volume 1: No Floors! (Presented by Don Cannon)

Posted by Doc Holliday on September 1 2010 one Commented

This is probably going to be my last post of the day unless I feel like doing some work after running around, this one is kinda funny too.  So I went to the great Black Milk and Freddie Gibbs show about a month back, the post with the mixtapes can also be found here.  I’m not on twitter a lot because i’m always so busy, but i’m on there from time to time…and i’ve been told i’m kinda funny.  Ok enough modesty, i’m funny, and for whatever reason people don’t expect it.  I usually post twitter updates from the numerous shows I go to…assuming I have phone service…Rock The Bells i’m looking at you.  At this particular show Push! Montana was one of the opening acts and…he definitely wasn’t terrible, I just wasn’t overly impressed with live performance.  I’m sure it won’t be the last time this happens, I tried to recently write about this phenomenon today here actually.  However, I was gracious enough to complement Mr. Montana on his chain though, I mean it was a very nice chain lol.  Anyway, he hits me up on twitter, saying thanks and gives me his mixtape.  I can respect that and me being the stand up guy I can only listen to it and post it on our site.  By the looks of the track listing and based on the fact Don Cannon is on it i’ll probably like it.  Lesson as always don’t talk too much shit, which I usually don’t and if you do at least get in the gym.  Well i’m off to the gym for the first time in a while before I do some running around, enjoy the music.

J. Ross – The Epidemik (Hosted by Superstar Jay)

Posted by Doc Holliday on September 1 2010 Add Comments

Damn, this is another post about a Jersey artist…fuck it we need this shit lol.  Once again another case of me going to look for good music and finding it…oh along with the most aggressive frisk i’ve ever witnessed in my life.  I hope it was as good for that aggressive as security guard as it was for me.  Anyway J. Ross was one of 2 artists both from Jersey that I really liked on my visit to the Arena to go see The Squadaz and The Street Spittas perform.  After a little technical difficulty…wait hold up i’ll tell you the one thing that fucking sucks about going to look for new music and artists.  I try to get to these events early to see the opening acts and the shits never FUCKING STARTS ON TIME.  Of course, there is always a little technical difficulty as well at least there is usually some nice ladies to take a look at.  Anyway, after the aforementioned technical difficulties I was greeted to an impressive a cepella freestyle from J. Ross that immediately got my attention and a couple more impressive songs.  He did have like 50 niggas on stage on though, but nonetheless we talked a bit after the show I got his CD and was even more impressed.  As were some of the Official Street Radio family, J. Ross is kind of a gritty, yet deep artist and my favorite songs were the deeper ones.  I’m definitely looking forward to the new mixtape, which is coming soon.  Hype what up!!! Jersey!!!

Apollo The Great – H.I.M. 1 & 2 x Showtime At The Apollo

Posted by Doc Holliday on September 1 2010 Add Comments

Download Mixtape: H.I.M. (History Is Made) 2

As a kid growing up in South Jersey especially Mays Landing I could count the number of rappers from Jersey on one hand, especially South Jersey.  Mays Landing is a small suburb, a bit more south of Camden, like 10 minutes from Atlantic City in case you were wondering.  I recently went to a little music seminar which was cool but I definitely disagreed with the notion that you rarely find good music when you go looking for it.  I don’t know maybe i’m different but I go looking for great music and I usually find just that, I listen to recommendations and keep my ear to the streets…shit from time to time I wait up in the streets.  Alcohol is usually involved in those incidents, but even in my beloved New Jersey I have found some great artists lately on my obsessive musical quests.  Apollo The Great is one of those artists and he might possibly be one of the best up and coming artist from my home state.  Aubrey Green, whom manages Apollo, recommended I give Apollo a listen, but it wasn’t until his appearance on our radio show that I actually listened to his music.  I kind of like that I didn’t hear his music until his appearance on the show as well, I like to be surprised when it comes to music.  I like to try to recreate those old days without the internet when an album or mixtape was the first time I heard the artist’s project for the first time.  It’s like musical overload these days and in case you ever wondered that’s why I don’t post a lot of singles or videos on our site.  That’s because I miss the old days sometimes and plus I figure you can find that shit on any other website.  So, of course, considering how talented Apollo is when I first him I was blown away.  The first song I heard was his single Call It Quits andthe flow, lyrics, and beat selection were all great.  Listen.

It’s something you very rarely find from a young artist these days, you can hear the influence of numerous artists in him.  Most notably, Nas which is probably the best comparison for Apollo, a young Nas.  I often hear so much about how so many artists don’t listen to any other music but there own…and to be quite honest it shows sometimes.  I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t listen to other music or some of classics to improve their own skills.  It’s like with anything else if you don’t study and put work in how do expect to improve.  Especially, when you surround yourself with yes men.  So it’s no surprise I always like artists that listen to a wide variety of music and not because i’m some fucking relic or anything either.  I just also believe those guys are diverse artists that understand how to make great music in just about any way imaginable.  The freestyle cypher that we usually close out our show with further showed that skill and influence as well.

So a couple weeks or maybe a month after that first meeting and shortly after seeing him perform I finally sat down and went through Apollo’s music.   I partly expected to hear a very cocky albeit talented artist as I listened to Apollo’s 3 mixtapes.  However, his music couldn’t have been more different than what I expected based on the person I met.  I partly understand, he is very talented and he is a rapper…so far be it for any rapper to be modest and let the music do the talking lol.  In all fairness as I have worked with more and more artist I understand a bit more, i’m sure the rap game can be pretty frustrating these days especially with artist with little to no talent blowing up.  I’m just always come from the school of thought that modesty is just better…and more fun too, far better to surprise someone than to disappoint them.  It’s probably the reason I always tell chicks i’m terrible in bed, because you never know she could have been banging a porn star.  So I like to keep expectations low…plus you know you have a small dick…WHOA WHOA…it’s not small either it’s fucking thin…spaghetti thin like the cop in Deuce Bigalow.  It’s like a twizzler…if you painted it silver and twisted it on the end, it’d look like a kick-stand.  That’s neither here nor there though, it’s just funny because Apollo’s music is so much different than I expected, but still very, very good.  I think he might be better suited to dial it down a bit and try to reflect the artist portrayed in his music a bit more.  Assuming the uplifting, introspective, and deeper person in his music or more akin to his actual personality.  You never know with rappers, I just assume everyone is lying.

Which finally brings us back to Apollo The…Performer, whether or not that person you meet when you hear his music is who he really is or not.  That is how I think he should work on presenting his music when he is performing.  I was struggling for awhile to describe how exactly an artist should perform and why certain artist move me while others don’t and some just make me want to cry.  I mean because Apollo’s live set is decent, but considering the quality of his music it could be much better…but then again the same could be said for a lot of artists much older.  A lot of them don’t even make music nearly as good…it’s easy to point out the good, great, and bad performance, but it wasn’t at the recent Curren$y concert.  Where I also saw Skyzoo perform for like the 10th time this year, that I finally could articulate that phenomenon.  So here goes…I believe an artist live set should match his music and how you want that music to be presented to the people.  It should match your delivery, if you have a hard hitting, crazy delivery like Skyzoo your live set should match that.  If you make fun, stoner yet lyrical music then I should feel like you are having fun while molesting the track as you perform…and you should probably be smoking too lol.  So really in closing the only reason I mention any of this is because i’ve been meaning to write something about people performing.  Secondly, as I wrote this earlier while listening to H.I.M. 2 there wasn’t much else to even complain about Apollo music.  I hope that doesn’t go to his head because any artist can always improve.  I would just say work on the live performance and maybe be a bit more humble, aside from that I think Apollo has a very bright future and I for one am glad he’s holding it down for Jersey.  Oh yeah!!! Showtime At The Apollo is probably my favorite of his mixtapes/albums too, as he raps over some classic beats most notably the beat from my favorite song It Was A Good Day on that mixtape. You can also check out more Apollo music and videos over at his website ApolloIsHIM.com.  Camden what up!!!

Even though I feel like absolute shit, this post is one promise I wanted to keep.  I often don’t have the time to do everything I want to do…who knows if I ever will have the time…I damn sure try.  Since, today marks the relase of the new project from one of my many favorite producers, Exile and I couldn’t let that pass without writing anything.  I’ve have dropped the ball numerous times in the past on things like this, I like to refer to myself as a habitual ball dropper at times.  However, if Rocky can change the feelings of whole country like he did in Rocky IV than I change.  If he dies then he dies.  Exile…is… ***hands the baton to Plug Research***

One of the most interesting, creative and banging producers of our day and age! Share this with as many friends as far and wide as you possibly can! What a special day in Hip Hop and Electronic music! We have tons of special goodies to share with you, but as we craft and prepare those, we would love for you to enjoy the new Exile record. Have a gorgeous and safe trip to Africa Exile. We’ll see you soon!

Here’s the old post about Exile that may help on your trip to Africa Exile.  Exile is definitely one of more interesting and creative producers at times a bit out there see Dirty Science, but definitely very talented.  He’s a mesh of a lot of different elements and honestly as I was all over the place musically today and since I wasn’t feeling that well it took me a while to sit and listen to the new album.  Once I sound down and got into it without skipping to my favorite songs I enjoyed it about as much as some of Exile’s other works.  A bit eclectic at times and an acquired taste but great music if you’re open minded enough to give it a chance.  It’s another Exile album that I would highly recommend for any serious music fan just like any of his other works.  Which brings me to some of his other works and my own history lesson of sorts…I guess that title is still a work in progress.  I’ve been called some good things and some bad things, shit some of the bad things I actually take great pride in.  One of nice things I always take great pride in though is my knowledge of music especially with respect to artists and really just things I like.  I’ve been called a hip hop historian of sorts, so I guess I figured we would take a look back at some of Exile greater works…yeah I probably shouldn’t have waited until the last minute to do this…ahh fuck it.

My first introduction to Exile and really Blu for that matter was Below The Heavens which was recommended by my little adopted sister, probably one of the few ladies who opinion I actually respect in regards to rap.  She’s kinda of my protege of sorts, and she was right I loved the album and really every person I have recommended the album to has loved it.  I’m interested to see if some real grimy niggas like nuck nuck or my little homie pistol starter will like it though as it’s not what I would call a grimy album at all.  It is the perfect marriage of production and artistry though as Exile’s soulful production was made for Blu.  I really hate fucking adjectives so just trust me, it’s a wonderful, soulful, smooth ride…ok i’m definitely crumbling like a wet paper bag and I still need to stop by various studios tonight.  I tried…I would say listen to Below The Heavens and Boy Meets World. Those are probably my two favorite but really all of the albums in this post with their fancy artwork are great.  Ok i’m off to get some meds and not use anymore adjectives for the rest of the night.  I’ll chalk up any additional bad grammer today to the way I feel right now for you grammer whores out there.
